Especially back in the day, post-rock was the genesis of some of the most exciting, different, beautiful, and challenging rock music ever made. Bands like Godspeed You Black Emperor, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Talk Talk, Slint, and Explosions in the Sky all had very different takes on the genre but were still creating very good music.
